John Malala

John Malala

rings in Kilifi, Kenya

John Malala is a bell ringer in Kenya. He rings at ACK St. Thomas memorial church in Kilifi, the only church in Kenya with a bell tower. It has a ring of 6 light bells. John started ringing in 2007 when he finished high school. He was attracted by the unique, beautiful sound of the bells, though most of the Anglican churches in Kenya use bells to signal the start of service, none has bells similar to those installed at his church. Most of the ringers also double up to be choir members and so being a choir member at the church the sound of the bells attracted him.  John is passionate about ringing because it’s an interesting activity and it’s also a service to God. Over the years John has gained experience through extensive training both internal and external, - he has been to the UK twice where he learnt and got an opportunity to participate in quarter peals - “the sweet memories which I live to remember”.
